Erik ten Hag says he saw “some really good things” as Manchester United beat Liverpool in his first game in charge, but insists he will not “overestimate this result”.

Jadon Sancho, Fred and Anthony Martial scored in a whirlwind first half at the two-thirds full Rajamangala Stadium, where Facundo Pellistri wrapped up the 4-0 victory in the Bangkok Century Cup.

It was a good start for Ten Hag on a night when Fred’s goal was the highlight, having met a poor clearance with an audacious right-footed chip from 20 yards that sailed over Brazil team-mate Alisson Becker in the Liverpool goal.

Liverpool are behind United in terms of pre-season preparations and started with a far less experienced team, but there were certainly welcome signs of quality and potential for United.

Pellistri’s goal was particularly impressive, with Eric Bailly’s driving run from the back ending with Amad Diallo playing back to Pellistri, back from a loan stint at Alaves, and the Uruguayan struck the ball into the bottom corner.

And Ten Hag says he was particularly impressed with United’s “speed and creativity up front”, but is also wary of making too much of the result, conceding he and his squad have plenty to work on after “a lot of mistakes”.

“I am satisfied today. It was a team with a great sprit and we know we are just getting started,” he said.

“We made some mistakes in the press, we conceded some chances, but we created a lot.

“We have to work hard to cut out the mistakes but of course we are happy.

“I know we have good players. We have started to build a team and I am happy with the first game.

“It will take a lot of time. I have seen a lot of mistakes. Liverpool played three teams, they were not at their strongest. We will not overestimate this result.

“But still, I have seen some really good things. A lot of speed and creativity up front.”
