Manchester United are reportedly in pole position for Goncalo Inacio after Erik ten Hag made the Sporting Lisbon star his No 1 defensive target of the summer.

The 20-year-old defender appears likely to leave the Portuguese giants this summer after an impressive campaign. He played 42 times in all competitions, earmarking himself as one of his nation’s brightest young defensive talents. And Ten Hag is reportedly a huge fan of the player after scouting him while in charge of Ajax.

The Manchester United manager has an enormous task on his hands rebuilding the Red Devils. A hugely ineffective season saw United limp home in sixth place, with Ralf Rangnick failing to lift spirits after taking over from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

As such, Ten Hag is looking to make two or three signings of genuine quality that can help revive the club. But with finances tight owing to a lack of Champions League football, the Dutchman must spend his money wisely.

Indeed, he also wants to strengthen in midfield and attack this summer. In terms of a midfielder, the United boss is hot on the trail of Frenkie de Jong. To that end, a report claims Ten Hag is convinced the midfielder will sign.

The Dutchman, though, will not come cheap with a fee in excess of £68m being bandied about.

And the man he wants to light up his attack, Darwin Nunez, could cost United anything in the region of up to £90m. The Red Devils will surely try and negotiate that down amid claims that United men have been offered in a swap deal.

As such, Ten Hag may not have huge funds left when it comes to bolstering his defence.

Price tag for Goncalo Inacio emerges

He has been linked with Jurrien Timber, Pau Torres and Josko Gvardiol as options.

However, The Sun reports that United are in the driving seat to sign Inacio instead.

The centre-half has a £39m exit clause in his deal, but the paper claims United hope to secure his signature for an initial £35m. A further £4m will be made up in bonuses and add-ons.

Wolves and Newcastle are also reportedly keeping tabs on the defender. However, it is United who are reportedly in pole position to land him with Ten Hag already making his interest clear in the defender.

United are also reportedly keen on his teammate, Matheus Nunes, who is rated in the £50m bracket. His price tag looks too high, however, with Manchester City likely to pursue his signature instead.

United need quality over quantity

Ten Hag has impressed United chiefs with his desire to start work six weeks ahead of schedule. And having watched in person their final-day defeat at Crystal Palace, he will know he has his work cut out.

United’s squad, very obviously, badly under-performed in the 2021/22 campaign. However, they are not bad players and probably need Ten Hag to give them a clear identity and style. Furthermore, he will also be looking to get the balance in the side right.

With funds relatively tight, it is likely that there will be more outgoings than incomings this summer.

As such, Ten Hag will be wise to focus on quality over quantity when it comes to strengthening his pool.

Indeed, it would be a surprise if any more than three big money signings came in this summer.

And with Ten Hag also placing emphasis on youth, don’t be surprised to see a number of United’s star youngsters taking their place in the squad.

United, meanwhile, reportedly still want track Konrad Laimer, with the Austrian potentially enticed to the club thanks to Rangnick.
