Erik ten Hag insisted that Cristiano Ronaldo is “totally committed” to Man Utd after the forward got on the scoresheet in the Europa League.
The Red Devils were beaten 1-0 by Real Sociedad in their opening group game in the Europa League.
Ten Hag’s men bounced back on Thursday night as they strolled past Moldovan side FC Sheriff.
It was as comfortable a win as Man Utd could have wished for as they ran out 2-0 winners.
Jadon Sancho opened the scoring before the break as he calmly found the net after producing some neat footwork inside the penalty area.
Cristiano Ronaldo later doubled their lead from the penalty spot after Diogo Dalot earned his side a penalty.
This was the experienced forward’s 699th career goal and was remarkably his first in the Europa League.
Ten Hag was pleased with what he saw from his side in the 2-0 victory. He thinks they are “in a good way” if they keep on improving as they are:
“After the first 10 minutes we found our formation, we were more secure, we had some good movements on the ball in the middle of the park, we kept the ball and in right moments we split up, we make a great goal with Jadon Sancho,” Ten Hag said (as reported by The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell).
“We did that more in this season, like Arsenal, many players involved in making a goal.
“So if we can keep this going, more quantity of such occasions, we are in a good way.”
On Sancho playing as a centre-forward, Ten Hag added: “Sancho in preparing the goal with Bruno [Fernandes], he was in the centre-forward position.
“We did some experiments this night, bringing Tyrell [Malacia] on the right and Luke [Shaw] on the left, that’s two good moves, we can be very able and we need that in the season.”
Ten Hag was also asked about his thoughts on Sancho and Rashford missing out on Gareth Southgate’s England squad ahead of this month’s international break:
“It’s not up to me, it’s the manager of England, I cannot be in his seat, I don’t want to do it.
“They are progressing, they are starting the season well, they will progress even more, I am convinced of that.”
Ronaldo was heavily linked with a move away in the summer but he will remain at United until January at the earliest. Ten Hag has insisted that the attacker is “totally involved”:
“He’s really close, when he gets more fitness he will score more,” Ten Hag continued.
“He’s totally committed to this project, totally involved, he also has connections that are coming around him (on the pitch) and he is constructing connections so I’m happy with that.”
