Manchester United are reportedly stepping up their plans to bring a Liverpool old boy to Old Trafford with Erik ten Hag seemingly intent on acquiring his services.

The Red Devils have enjoyed something of a renaissance this season under Ten Hag’s charge. Having spent well over £200m last summer, there have been some noticeable improvements in results. And with the club through to FA Cup semi-finals and Europa League quarter-finals, hopes are alive for a successful end to the season.

Indeed, they have already got the Carabao Cup in the bag, bringing an end to a six-year wait for silverware.

Furthermore, they are sat in third place in the Premier League and look well placed to bring Champions League football back to the club next season.

United’s form this season has been nothing short of impressive. However, further improvements will be expected next season with Ten Hag likely to spend another boatload of cash this summer.

To that end, the United boss is ready to fine-tune his squad. And Wednesday’s Euro Paper Talk claims a £54m man is set to depart with a free agent coming in his place.

There will be plenty of other comings and goings too. The United boss wants to strengthen his attack and a club transfer record is possible.

The Red Devils will also make changes to his midfield too, with a regular partner for Casemiro sought in midfield.

And Tuesday’s Transfer Gossip suggested a surprise move for former Liverpool man Marko Grujic was in the works.

Man Utd pushing for Marko Grujic deal

The Serbian star was Jurgen Klopp’s first signing at Liverpool but never really made the grade at Anfield. Indeed, he managed just 16 appearances during his time at Anfield, taking in loans at Cardiff City and Hertha Berlin.

However, he was eventually sold to FC Porto for around £10.1m, having played a year on loan in Portugal.

And it seems life at the Estadio do Dragao has suited the midfielder. To that end, the move has finally allowed Grujic to realise his potential.

Indeed, he has emerged as a key component of Sergio Conceicao’s side, making 94 appearances for the club. And that form has seen his displays catch the eye of a number of big-name suitors.

As such, AC Milan are among those reportedly keeping tabs on his situation.

However, United are reportedly keen too, and now Serbian outlet Telegraf have confirmed their interest is genuine.

They report that United officials have made a firm enquiry for his services and that ‘contacts have already been established through intermediaries’.

And they write that a transfer looks a genuine possibility with Porto looking to make a hefty profit on their initial investment.

The report indeed claims Grujic ‘could change his environment and move to England or Italy’ and that Porto are set to ‘make significant money from the potential transfer’.

Per reports, Porto are looking for a fee of around £40m for the 26-year-old star.

Grujic in, Scott McTominay out at Man Utd

With Grujic seemingly emerging as a genuine target, United could look to fund his signing by offloading some of their unwanted players.

And while Scott McTominay does not quite fall into that bracket, the midfielder faces a battle for his future.

To that end, he was the subject of a failed enquiry from Newcastle in January.

And while Ten Hag waved away their efforts, a fresh move in the summer could well secure his sale.

Now Fabrizio Romano is indicating that a potential move to St James’ Park could well go through this summer.

“Manchester United rejected all January offers for Scott McTominay but this summer they will be discussed again,” Romano told Caught Offside. “Newcastle United and Eddie Howe really like McTominay.”

McTominay is contracted to United until summer 2025, while the club has the option of another year. However, a £40m offer will likely persuade them to sell the 26-year-old, who recently surpassed 200 appearances for United.
