Erik ten Hag has revealed that Manchester United midfielder Casemiro is “fit” to feature against Southampton in the Premier League this weekend.
Casemiro was unveiled at Old Trafford on Monday before United’s win against arch-rivals Liverpool.
The ex-Real Madrid star emerged as a target after the Red Devils seemingly grew frustrated in their pursuit of Frenkie de Jong. As did everyone else, to be fair.
Casemiro looks to be a great signing on paper, as he has established himself as one of the best defensive midfielders in the world.
Ten Hag has revealed that the Brazil international could feature against Southampton on Saturday. Anthony Martial is unavailable though as the Frenchman has an achilles injury:
“Casemiro is fit, he did all the training sessions. He [Martial] came out with a problem with his achilles,” Ten Hag told reporters on Friday (via Manchester Evening News).
“I cannot tell a prognosis, how long it takes. I hope he will be available for the next game.”
Man Utd put in a much-improved performance on Monday night against Liverpool, as before that they were beaten by Brighton and Brentford.
Ten Hag is keen for his team to “build further” after picking up three points against Jurgen Klopp’s side:
“The spirit was already good but now it is even better [following Monday’s vs Liverpool win].
“But it’s only one game so we have to build further, we have to develop and I think everyone is aware of that.
“We need to have a high standard. It’s a demand to the group.
“Now they see what the reward is, so we have to match the runs in and out of possession. We need runs and movement if you want to dictate a game.”
Man Utd remain in the market for new signings ahead of the close of the summer transfer window on September 1.
Bringing in Antony from Ajax appears to be their main focus. The Dutch side want around £84m for their prized asset who reportedly handed in a transfer request earlier this week.
United also want a new goalkeeper and they seem to want a new forward, with Memphis Depay being linked with an extraordinary return to Old Trafford.
Ten Hag also insisted on Friday that it is important that they sign the “right players”:
“We need players but we need the right players.
“The whole transfer window, we are happy with what we did until now, but the bar has to be high.”
