Erik ten Hag refused to take any meaningful momentum away from the 4-0 thrashing Manchester United gave Liverpool in their pre-season encounter.

The two Premier League rivals got their 2022/23 campaign preparations off to polar opposite starts on Tuesday. Jurgen Klopp’s side, looking to bounce back from their quadruple near-miss last term, lost out in their opener.

Although United, who are at the start of what they hope will prove an exciting journey under new manager Ten Hag, got off to a perfect beginning.

Ten Hag’s first match as Man Utd manager – while not a competitive one – saw his side produce a convincing win.

Jadon Sancho struck first after 12 minutes, before Fred made it 2-0. Ten Liverpool changes followed, before Anthony Martial made it 3-0 in Bangkok. United replenished their ranks at half-time, followed by another raft of Reds changes.

But the script stayed the same, with Facundo Pellistri rounding off a 4-0 win for Man Utd over Liverpool. Speaking to MUTV, though, Ten Hag kept a lid on his post-match thoughts.

“Of course we are satisfied today because I think it was a team with a great spirit, and we know we have just started,” the Dutchman said.

“We did the press, a few mistakes in pressing, conceded some chances, but we also created a lot. I think our team played brave, played proactive.

“We have to work really hard to get out of the mistakes, but of course we are happy with the first game.

“I know we have good players. We started, first game now, so I am happy.”

Ten Hag offers Man Utd verdict

Ten Hag added that while his United project will take time to bear fruit, he has already seen exciting “potential” from one aspect of his team.

“[It will take] a lot of time. Believe me. I have seen a lot of mistakes, the manager said.

“Liverpool played three teams, and they were not at their strongest. We have not overestimated this result.

“We have to be careful, but still, I have seen some really good things, and I think what we see, we have a lot of creativity and speed in front, we have potential.”

Old Trafford curtain-raiser is true test

While the pre-season result will have given both managers valuable information about their teams, Ten Hag and Klopp know the true curtain-raiser between the sides is yet to come.

Indeed, Man Utd host Liverpool at Old Trafford in a mouth-watering early-season Premier League encounter in August.

United have got the early bragging rights after Tuesday’s result, but the 4-0 result is ultimately only a stepping stone for both sides towards the new season.

As for who performed well for United, French striker Martial impressed and centre-back Eric Bailly also put in a solid shift.
