Erik ten Hag is not ruling out the prospect of Cristiano Ronaldo remaining at Manchester United beyond this season, while explaining how the striker will fit into his plans.

Ronaldo’s future is the main thing Manchester United need to sort out at present. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has indicated a desire to leave if a club in the Champions League come calling. After finishing sixth in the Premier League last season, his current employers only have Europa League involvement on offer.

Where exactly Ronaldo may end up is an interesting dilemma. There have been connections with Chelsea and Bayern Munich, only for both to play the rumours down. More recently, reports have suggested a sensational return to Spain with Atletico Madrid – cross-city rivals of his former club Real Madrid.

But any decision over Ronaldo’s future would have to have the blessing of Manchester United. Indeed, his contract at Old Trafford still has one season left to run on it.

Therefore, Ten Hag thinks he can count on the 37-year-old for his own debut season in the dugout. Furthermore, he also reiterated that Ronaldo could take up his option to stay for the 2023-24 campaign.

“I am well informed – he also has an option [for a further season],” Ten Hag is quoted as saying by The Guardian. He then added when asked if Ronaldo could stay beyond this season: “Yes.

“Of course I have signed here for three years but in football it’s short term as well. We have to win from the start. So I don’t look that far ahead.”

Ronaldo is currently absent from Man Utd’s pre-season preparations for personal reasons. But Ten Hag has confidence that by the time the curtain lifts for the Premier League season and when the Portuguese legend is available again, he will be up to speed.

“We all know Ronaldo is a top professional and will be fit. That is the last concern I have,” he replied.

Ten Hag confident Cristiano Ronaldo can press

Ronaldo was the top scorer for Man Utd last season after returning to the club from Juventus. However, there were some concerns about his impact on the balance of the team.

Some feel he is not suitable for pressing from the front, which is a tactic Ten Hag will be utilising. But the Dutchman believes the number seven is able to fulfil that task.

“Cristiano is capable of doing that. In his career he has shown everything,” Ten Hag said.

“We want to play in a certain way. A top player can contribute and Ronaldo is an absolute top player in our squad.”

However, Ten Hag also confirmed that he would be basing his overall style on the players at his disposal.

“The players dictate the way you play. Especially players who score goals because they are extremely important for a team,” he added. “You construct your team around them.”

All eyes will be on Old Trafford to see how Ten Hag sets United up for their first Premier League game of the season against Brighton on August 7th.
