Giorgi showed great poise to take the final to a decider having been 3-0 and 5-3 down in the second set after losing a 69-minute first set on a tie-break.

The deciding set saw Cornet into a 3-0 lead again but Giorgi, competing in her first WTA final, came storming back – this time winning five of the next six games – to take a 5-4 advantage.

Serving to stay in the match, Cornet fended off a match point before levelling things at 5-5, and an immediate break of the Giorgi serve was followed by a hold to love to wrap up the win in three hours and 11 minutes.

"What a match," said a relieved Cornet.

"It was definitely a huge fight, which is what I expected, and I had to save a match point to win the title, so it feels very special. I gave everything I had.

"I'm so happy I could win here at this beautiful tournament in Katowice."

The win is Cornet’s first of 2014.
