Federer, who is playing an ATP Tour event during the opening week of the season for the first time since 2000, served nine aces and broke his opponent five times during the match.
In the other semi-final, Lleyton Hewitt will take on second seed Kei Nishikori, with Hewitt having thrashed qualifier Marius Copil 6-4 6-2 and Nishikori having come through a tough match against Marin Cilic to win 6-4 5-7 6-2.
