French second seed Gasquet trounced Austria’s Juergen Melzer 6-3 6-1 in an hour and five minutes and will face Germany’s Florian Mayer in the last eight.

"I can go far for sure," said Gasquet. "I can lose too. Every match is difficult.

“I lost to Florian last year at Wimbledon. He’s a tough opponent on grass. It will be difficult. But I’m here to win."

Mayer got through in similarly unfussy fashion, seeing off namesake Leonardo Mayer from Argentina 6-2 6-3.

Two more Germans went through as third seed, defending champion and two-times Halle winner Tommy Haas beat Latvia’s Ernests Gulbis 7-6(5) 6-4, while sixth seed and 2011 champ Philipp Kohlschreiber beat compatriot Tobias Kamke 6-4 6-3.

"I feel comfortable here," said Kohlschreiber. "The atmosphere is very special here. It’s a great grass court tournament. I play well, so it’s huge fun."

Kohlschreiber plays Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny next, while Haas is up against Frenchman Gael Monfils.

Favourite and five-times champion Roger Federer is up against Mischa Zverev of Germany in the quarters.
