Kleybanova broke twice as she comfortably took the first set before edging the second via a tie-break to win through 6-2 7-6(3) in one hour and 29 minutes – her first victory over a top 10 player since 2011.

The Russian’s reward for victory is a third-round match with either fifth seed Jelena Jankovic or Flavia Pennetta.

It was always going to be difficult for Kvitova to adapt to clay after she had played in Czech Republic’s resounding Fed Cup win over Italy on hard courts just three days earlier.

There were no such shocks for eighth seed Sara Errani who dispatched of Kaia Kanepi 6-3 6-3, while ninth seed Ana Ivanovic overcame Sabine Lisicki 6-1 6-3 in their first round tie.
