Also in action in Rotterdam was top seed Juan Martin del Potro, who had to work a little harder to see off Gael Monfils 7-6(6) 6-3.

Fourth seed Richard Gasquet needed three sets to despatch wildcard Thiemo de Bakker 6-7(5), 7-6(2), 6-3.

Sixth seed Tommy Haas edged out Fernando Verdasco 6-7(4) 7-6(1) 7-5, while the biggest shock of the first round came via Austrian qualifier Dominic Thiem, ranked 113rd in the world, as he knocked out 36th-ranked Jarkko Nieminen 6-4 4-6 6-4.

Thiem has a challenge in store for him in round two, however, in the form of Murray himself.
