After reaching the final in both Washington and Montreal, the new World No.5 Daniil Medvedev beat Novak Djokovic and David Goffin to win the biggest title of his career so far in Cincinnati. On The Tennis Podcast, the team discuss Medvedev’s rich vein of form, and compare his US Open prospects with Roger Federer’s.

In order to mount a comeback against Djokovic, Medvedev switched tactics mid-match and began to hit his second serve just as aggressively as his first. It paid off for Medvedev, but will he be able to sustain that approach over five sets? Is there any danger of his summer tennis spree catching up with him in New York? And can a player who has never been beyond the last 16 at a Grand Slam really be in the mix to win one?

As for Federer, he suffered his fastest defeat since 2003, losing in straight sets to Andrey Rublev. Will Federer’s lack of match practice leave him vulnerable at the US Open? How important is it that he has a kind draw to ease himself into form? And do the hot and humid conditions work against him in New York?

Elsewhere, Catherine Whitaker (Amazon Prime Video, Eurosport), David Law (BT Sport, BBC 5 Live) and Matt Roberts discuss the other major talking points from Cincinnati, including Madison Keys’ title run, Svetlana Kuznetsova’s resurgence, and Nick Kyrgios’ $113,000 fine.

The Tennis Podcast is produced weekly throughout the year, in association with The Telegraph. There will be daily editions during the US Open.
