Ward reached the third and final qualifying round at Roland Garros with a shock 7-5 7-6 (7-4) win over Ryan Harrison of the US.

The British number three now faces Slovenian Blaz Rola, who is ranked 75 places higher than him at 94, as he bids to join Andy Murray in the men's draw for the start of the tournament proper on Sunday.

Konta continued her good form on the outskirts of Paris with a battling 6-4 2-6 6-3 victory over Poland's Paula Kania, overcoming a medical time out for treatment on her back in the final set.

She now meets Ukraine's Yuliya Beygelzimer for a place in the main draw.

Meanwhile, Watson, Britain's number two, downed American Irina Falconi 6-2 6-4 in her first-round encounter and must now win two matches on Friday if she is to qualify. First up is another Ukrainian Kateryna Kozlova.
