WEYMOUTH have paid tribute to former chairman Terry Bennett, who recently passed away aged 78 after a long illness.

Bennett became chairman at the Terras in 2001 before quitting in 2003 and is credited with bringing the club out of a financial mire.

Bennett also founded the eponymous and famous fish and chip shop on Weymouth harbourside.

Terras chairman Ian White issued a statement paying his respects via social media this morning.

"It is with great sadness that Weymouth Football Club have learnt of the passing of former club chairman Terry Bennett," White said.

"Terry became the club chairman in the early 2000s when the club was truly on its knees financially.

"No one wanted the poisoned chalice, but up stepped the bold larger than life Terry Bennett. His heart was truly in the club, even to point that he used his own money to help keep the club afloat.

"Weymouth Football Club will always have a place in its heart for this lovely man and the Weymouth Football Club family sends its condolences and respect to the family and friends of Terry."
