Murray questioned the Italian’s conduct after he made a noise when Murray was about to win a point at the net.

The Scot warned his opponent to “shut up” and complained repeatedly to the umpire before eventually going down to a 7-6, 2-6, 7-6 defeat.

England face the Czech Republic on Friday in their latest Euro 2020 qualifier, and Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold has said that the team will stick together with any decision made if there is racist abuse from supporters.

Clare Stokes wrote on Twitter: “Unbelievable what nonsense these people will make up! Me and Ben messing about squishing up each other’s faces cos that’s how we show affection and some pap tries to twist it in to a crazy story!”
