In fact, all ten episodes of the show made the top 40, with seven of them appearing in the top ten.

The list has been compiled using data published by the Broadcasters’ Audience Research Board (Barb).

ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent final came in second, with 12.75m of us watching Jules and Matisse win.

23 BBC One and 17 ITV programmes feature, with no other channel having shows on the list. Strictly Come Dancing is the show with the most entries (12 appearances in total).

While ITV programmes Britain’s Got Talent and I’m A Celebrity both feature, no episodes of The X Factor made the list, with the show suffering low ratings this year.

ITV did, however, have the most-watched sporting event of the year, with 9.7million people watching England take on Wales in the Rugby World Cup.

The also had the most-watched entertainment programme (BGT) and the highest-rated dramas (Broadchurch and Downton Abbey).
