Mark Lawrenson believes new Liverpool manager Arne Slot is facing 'immense pressure' and offered a theory on the future of Reds favourite Xabi Alonso.

Slot was unveiled as the new head coach on Monday, ending speculation over who will replace Jurgen Klopp. The German signed off on a successful nine-year spell with a 2-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Klopp orchestrated a chant for the incoming head coach prior to his announcement, during an emotional speech after his final match in charge. Slot has been tasked with steering the Reds into the new era after leaving Feyenoord but there was fierce speculation about other candidates.

Alonso was installed as the immediate favourite following Klopp's announcement in January but the Bayer Leverkusen head coach dismissed links with the post at his former club, as they eyed their first ever Bundesliga crown. Ruben Amorim was also mooted with the role, as well as Roberto De Zerbi, but Slot stood out during a painstaking recruitment process.

Former defender Lawrenson believes Alonso will succeed Slot but felt following Klopp wasn't the right time for the Spanird. He said: "The people I speak to, and I feel the same, think maybe the time to get the job was after Mr Slot.

"The pressure now will be immense and maybe Alonso has been really cute by saying ‘I’d love to have the job but not yet’, and that’s the way of the world.

"They will back him, though. There is no doubt about that because that’s the way the football club is. They know he’s going to be different, and anyone who doesn’t realise that is not a proper Liverpool fan."
