Just how crazy is this college basketball season?
There’s not a single team with better than 8-to-1 odds to win the NCAA championship, according to BetOnline. The team that carries the burden of favorite, such as it is, is the Kansas Jayhawks, who are 10-2 and rank third in the current Associated Press Rankings.
There are three teams at 10-to-1, including top-ranked Gonzaga, Duke and Ohio State. Kentucky, Louisville and Michigan State are 12-to-1.
That’s seven teams with almost identical odds to win the championship. By contrast, there are only 12 teams left in the hunt for the Super Bowl, and yet the Baltimore Ravens are a fairly clear favorite at roughly 2-to-1, with the 49ers and Chiefs at 4-to-1 and eight teams with odds of 10-to-1 or greater, including the Bills, Texans and Titans all as low as 50-to-1.
There are 28 teams with odds better than 50-to-1 to win the NCAA title.
This college basketball season has seen only two teams (Auburn and San Diego State) last to the new year with undefeated records, and only nine more (including West Virginia, Gonzaga, Memphis and Butler) that have lost just once.
Just how wild the season has been is best capsulized by this fact: Duke’s only loss came at home, to Stephen F. Austin, which lost both of its other high-major games by a combined 22 points. But there also is the fact such teams as San Diego State (from 250-to-1 to 33-to-1) and West Virginia (from off the board to 66-to-1) have seen their probability of winning the title soar.
This shows how the teams’ odds have moved just in the past month.
