Thierry Henry revealed that he turned down “attractive offers” before joining Monaco as their new head coach.

Henry was strongly linked with Aston Villa, before the Midlands club appointed Dean Smith as their new manager this week, and the Egypt national team.

But the 41-year-old has decided to return to the club he first played at as a professional.

“It is with great pride that I have accepted the position of manager of Monaco,” Henry said.

“I was fortunate to receive some very attractive offers over the last few months but Monaco will always be close to my heart.

“Having started my footballing career with this great club, it seems like fate that I will now begin my managerial career here too. I’m incredibly excited to be given this opportunity but now the hard work must begin. Can’t wait.”

Henry’s illustrious playing career included eight seasons at Arsenal, where he helped the club to two Premier League titles, including their unbeaten 2003/04 season, and three FA Cups, as well as an appearance in the European Cup final. He scored a club record 228 goals for the London giants.

The Frenchman retired from playing in 2014, and since the summer of 2016 has been a coach with the Belgium national team.

His first game in charge for Monaco, who are currently languishing in 18th place, will be a visit to Strasbourg in Ligue 1 next Saturday night, before a trip to Bruges in the Champions League four days later.
