Gabby Agbonlahor has urged Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag to sit down with Antony after his on-pitch outburst in the defeat to Brighton last week.

The former Aston Villa frontman feels that the £86million summer signing only lashed out at the Seagulls’ eventual matchwinner Alexis Mac Allister at The Amex because of “frustration” over his poor performances.

Antony squandered several opportunities in ack-to-back United losses to Brighton and then West Ham on Sunday.

But going back to the Thursday defeat, the Brazil international was deemed fortunate to avoid a red card for kicking out at the Argentina World Cup winner.

Antony has scored just four goals in 22 Premier League appearances this term after his big-money arrival from Ajax.

The 23-year-old earns around £200,000-a-week but is not exactly warranting that outlay, although he does have a further four goals in other competitions this term.

But speaking about the winger’s antics on the south coast, Agbonlahor is clearly not a fan.

He told Football Insider: “I think he’s a bit of an idiot, to be honest.

“There was no need for that tackle on Mac Allister, and then he’s trying to go chest to chest with a giant in Lewis Dunk. He’d have destroyed him.”

Ten Hag urged to act over Antony antics

Frustration is clearly playing a big role in Antony’s antics, with Agbonhalor urging Erik ten Hag to speak to the player before it’s too late.

He added: “Is Antony frustrated with his own performance, and that’s why he’s lashing out?

“He can’t take a player on, he can’t beat a man, he can’t get a shot on goal. He’s got to be frustrated with his own performances this season.

“Ten Hag has got to speak to him about it. He’s got to calm down or he’ll get red cards.

“He’s got to try and become the £86million player he was brought in to be.”

United are back in action on Saturday when they host Wolves in the Premier League at Old Trafford.
