Everton Fan View: Walcott is great business for Everton

The opinion between Everton fans seems split on Theo Walcott. That surprised me as I’m absolutely delighted that he has signed with the club. A portion of that split opinion is that his position isn’t really a priority. I personally think that’s irrelevant if funds aren’t an issue, he’s an upgrade on what we have.

Getting a left-back is Everton’s immediate need, and if this transfer means that we have no funds available for that, then it’s a bad move. That, however, is clearly not the case. Everton need goals and they need pace, Walcott can provide both.

Having Walcott and Bolasie either side of Sigurdsson with Tosun up front adds a lot of balance and pace to our attacking play, and might even mean we get a few shots on target.

Walcott is seen as a player who hasn’t filled his potential. I think that is for two huge reasons that happen to a lot of players. The first being that he has never played enough games. The second is having untimely injuries at times when he was being given an opportunity. For me, the potential is huge for this transfer to be great business.

Time for Walcott to thrive

I think Walcott will thrive under regular games at Goodison Park, the fans will love the pace and excitement and he’ll find confidence from that. The fee paid doesn’t faze me either, it’s hard to judge what is, or isn’t, good value anymore. We’ll get a lot more production from Walcott than we do with Bolasie, who we payed a lot more money for.

He’s a proven Premier League player who has a good scoring record for minutes played. He can give us balance on the wing and provide cover for the striker position. He may not have been a number one priority, but he vastly improves our squad which is what you always hope your club do. The likes of Ademola Lookman and Nikola Vlasic can’t currently be relied on to add what Walcott can. Also, I’d much prefer for Lookman or Vlasic to be given game time alongside Walcott in the same side.

Obviously time will tell how effective Walcott will be in a blue shirt and how he fits into the team. Everton gives him an opportunity to resurrect his career and get back to playing regular football. Everton have made quite a few bad signings in the last few windows, I don’t think this is another one.
