Brentford boss Thomas Frank does not understand Leicester City’s sacking of Steve Cooper and rues the “terrible” timing of the decision for his side.

The Bees play host to City on Saturday afternoon in their first match after Cooper’s departure last Sunday. Ruud van Nistelrooy will not be appointed manager in time, with first-team coach Ben Dawson acting as caretaker for the fixture at the Gtech Community Stadium.

But Frank cannot fathom why Cooper wouldn’t be in the dugout. City head to west London in 16th place in the Premier League table, one point outside the relegation zone but as the best performing of the three promoted sides.

“It is terrible timing for us, but we will deal with it,” Frank said at his press conference on Friday. "I'm always sad to hear when a fellow coach gets sacked.

"I know Steve quite well from the Championship and the Premier League and I think he's a brilliant coach. Looking from the outside, I don't really understand why (he was sacked).

"In terms of preparation, we don't know exactly what they will come with. I have watched zero minutes of Leicester this week because I think it's a waste of time."

With Van Nistelrooy’s debut to come on Tuesday night, at home to West Ham, the task of claiming a result at Brentford falls to Dawson. The Bees have the best home record in the division, with Crystal Palace, Southampton, Wolves, Ipswich and Bournemouth all defeated at the Gtech, and with West Ham the only club to claim a result, a 1-1 draw in September.

Frank does not have any players returning from injury for the game, with full-back Rico Henry, utility defender Kristoffer Ajer and winger Gustavo Nunes still sidelined. They do have midfielder Christian Norgaard available though after the club won an appeal against his three-match ban for a red card against Everton.

He said: “In general, it's good. We have no more injuries and we are progressing with the players who are out. Kristoffer and Nunes will not be available for this game.

“It's more happiness that we have him (Norgaard) available for the next three games. It would have been a very harsh decision. I'm very happy that it was correctly overturned.”
