Thomas Frank: I wouldn't swap Brentford front three with any Championship rival

Brentford boss Thomas Frank says he wouldn’t swap his front three for any other in the Championship, after they earned a 3-1 west London derby win over QPR on Monday night.

Ollie Watkins scored twice to take his league tally for the season into double figures, with Algerian playmaker Said Benrahma getting the other, while winger Bryan Mbeumo played a significant part in two of the goals.

Having lost top goalscorer Neal Maupay to Premier League side Brighton in a £20million move this summer, Brentford struggled to find the net in the early part of the season, scoring just twice in their first five Championship games.

However, Monday’s win was the Bees’ third in succession, taking them within three points of the play-off spots, and with nine goals coming in that run, Frank believes things have finally clicked.

“The front three work so hard together, off the ball and on the ball,” he said. “It’s fantastic that Ollie scored two goals, but it cannot be only him scoring, so it’s very good that in the last two games Said has been opening his account and Bryan is also adding to that – what a beautiful assist for the first goal by the way.

“I don’t think I want to change them with the players of any other club – I’m very, very satisfied with the three players. The relations between them is getting better and better. Ollie is doing fantastic, Said will still grow because he’s still coming into top fitness and Bryan is doing well but there’s a lot more to come from him.”

Watkins in particular has excelled so far this season, moving into a leading central role, having previously operated as a winger or alongside Maupay.

“I can only praise him for his work ethic,” Frank added. “Look how hard he works throughout the game, that’s a massive big thing for us.

“And then we’ve been working very hard with him to stay on the last line, and the first goal is a very clear example of that, where we want him in-between the two centre backs.”
