Chelsea have been boosted by the return of Jorginho for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup clash with Brentford, but Lewis Baker is out after becoming the latest player to test positive for Covid-19.

The Blues have been battling an outbreak of coronavirus and had just four outfield players on the bench at Wolves on Sunday.

Chelsea had lobbied the Premier League to get the game postponed, but that request was rejected and they ended up drawing 0-0 at Molineux.

They are now preparing to face Brentford in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday and Thomas Tuchel has called up academy players to boost his numbers.

The German will be able to welcome back Jorginho, who missed the Wolves game, as his Covid-19 test ahead of that trip was a false positive.

Midfielder Baker, however, is now out of the match against the Bees as he has tested positive for coronavirus.

Trevoh Chalobah, who came off injured at half-time against Wolves, is an injury doubt and Andreas Christensen looks set to miss out too.

“Nobody is back from there, except for Jorginho because he had a negative test, so it was a wrong positive obviously. He’s back in training,” said Tuchel.

“Andreas Christensen is very doubtful due to injury and the same for Trevoh Chalobah.

“They (the academy players) trained with us yesterday and today. We made them come for two training sessions, because it is necessary.

“When we made them come we detected that Lewis Baker is positive for Covid, so another player is out. So we also take a risk to bring in other players from the academy, who have it (Covid).

“This is the situation. To have a team with 13 or 14 players for one match, this is a problem but not a big problem.

“We can do it and we can fight, but from the match we have Trevoh Chalobah injured. We have him in big doubts. We have N’Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic involved, which was taking a huge, huge risk and now we are paying for this.

“They cannot just simply start with five matches in two weeks or with three matches in one week, it’s simply impossible. So the problem will increase, the situation will increase and we cannot let players suffer because other players are not there. It’s simply impossible.

“We have to protect our players and protect the health and that’s why we brought in the academy [players]. It’s no secret and we think about playing with them.”
