Thomas Tuchel has warned that Chelsea will pay the price for being forced to play through a Covid-19 outbreak at the club.

The European champions were held to a goalless draw at Wolves, which saw them lose further ground on Manchester City at the top of the table.

They saw an application to have the game postponed denied by the Premier League, despite six players testing positive for Covid. Jorginho could yet be a seventh case after returning inconclusive results.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Kai Havertz joined Romelu Lukaku, Timo Werner, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ben Chilwell as confirmed cases. It meant N’Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic were thrown into the action sooner than expected after recent injury lay-offs.

Tuchel said: “I understand the decision. They say, ‘Look, they have 14 players,’ but if you look a bit more in detail you see Trevoh Chalobah with two training sessions, Mateo Kovacic, one training session, you see N’Golo Kante has one training session.

“We put a huge health and safety risk physically and not only from Covid. This was the decision and of course, that’s it. I’m not sure if I catch it and hopefully I will not catch it. Will I do sports the very next day if I have to isolate for 10 days?

“We put Kova into a Premier League match the second day after a Covid infection. So if you count this as 14 valuable players to play in the Premier League – the toughest league in the world - on the level that it needs, okay it is like this.

“We can survive a game, but we will pay the price. At some point we will pay the price for sure.”

City’s 4-0 win against Newcastle saw them open up a six-point lead on Chelsea.

Tuchel added: “The problem is not the points we dropped today. Did City win against Newcastle? Okay, so that’s predictable.

“The points that hurt are the ones we lost at home against Man United, Burnley and Everton. These are the six points that hurt and not today.

“I cannot and will not comment on any other games that are postponed or not postponed. We never compared ourselves to any other situation.

“We were just worried about the safety of our players. The players were concerned about their health because we had several consecutive positive tests on consecutive days and that was it.”
