Former Pakistan batsman Ramiz Raja was shocked to see India’s batting against England on the first day of the Headingley Test.

After coming from a puissant victory at Lord’s, Virat Kohli and his men faltered against the England bowlers on Wednesday as they were bowled out for 78, which is their third-lowest total in the first innings of a Test match.

Rohit Sharma’s 19 runs from 105 balls was the top score for India with Ajinkya Rahane scoring 18 runs, the second-best on a scoresheet where eight batsmen were dismissed for a single-digit score. Rohit and Rahane seemed to revive India’s innings after James Anderson unleashed an absolute carnage in the first hour of play, for which India’s batsman had no answer to provide.

Rahane departed at the stroke of lunch and Rohit miscued his pull-shot against Craig Overton only to get caught at mid-on by Ollie Robinson. India’s heroes in the last match, Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah were dismissed on the first ball they faced.

Anderson (3/6), Overton (3/14), Robinson (2/16), and Sam Curran (2/27) scripted India’s batting collapse on Day 1. Ramiz Raja said cricket is a leveler and no one can take the game for granted.

“Who would have thought that after winning comprehensively at Lord’s, India would dig a big hole for themselves at Headingley? Cricket is a great leveller and you cannot take it for granted,” Ramiz Raja said on his YouTube channel.

Skipper Kohli had won the toss and asked England to field first, as India was aiming to repeat the Lord’s story but in a nutshell, the entire team failed to surpass a three-digit figure, where only two batsmen registered a two-digit score next to their name.

Raja criticized Indian team management for not giving the proper advice to the captain on what to do after winning the toss.

“The role of the think tank is to read the pitch well and pass on the right information to the captain to make his job easier. Their job is also to tell the captain what to do after winning the toss,” Ramiz Raja said.

England openers Rory Burns (52*) and Haseeb Hameed (60*) continued to dominate the day against India with their unbeaten 120-run stand as the hosts took a lead of 42 runs by the end of the day’s play.
