Arsenal’s impressive recent run of results and performances has been led by Mikel Arteta’s young stars, with the club’s Hale End academy producing plenty to be excited about.

Here are three young players who could be set for a big year in 2022…

Charlie Patino

There has not been this much excitement in the Arsenal academy since a certain Jack Wilshere came through the ranks. Patino is a talented central midfielder, who likes to get the ball down and play.

For the first team, he is likely to play in a deeper role and the chance to learn off Granit Xhaka, who is also left footed, could be handy for his development. A loan to a Championship club may also be wise in the new year too.

Folarin Balogun

Arsenal could suddenly be short on strikers and that may well open the door for Balogun to step forward.

The 20-year-old has been in prolific form for the club’s Under-23s side and a loan in January is expected, most likely to a Championship team.

When he returns, Balogun could find that Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah - who are out of contract - have left and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could be gone too.

Arsenal will need reinforcements in attack to cover those losses, but Balogun could be a valuable squad option.

William Saliba

The centre-back looks set to have a big 2022, but the question is whether that is at Arsenal or not.

Saliba moved to the Gunners in 2019 and three years later he is still yet to play for them, despite originally being handed the No4 shirt.

He has done well on loan at Marseille this season and the 20-year-old could surely provide competition for Gabriel and Ben White’s places.

It remains to be seen, however, whether Saliba would accept being third choice after a season of regular football in France.
