Three free agent targets for the Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears are less than two weeks away from their regular season opener. Usually that’s an exciting prospect, but with the way these Bears have played in August it’s more of an anxiety-inducing idea than anything.

Chicago desperately needs to add more depth and talent at several key positions if they’re going to finish anywhere but last in the NFC North this season.

With that in mind, here are three players they should be aggressively courting in the coming days.

Three free agent targets for the Chicago Bears

1. Vikings Center John Sullivan

According to Tom Pelissero at USA Today, the Minnesota Vikings are actively shopping veteran center John Sullivan:

The Chicago Bears have a powerful need for a new center after their projected starter Hronis Grassu was lost for the year to an ACL injury a few weeks ago.

If the Vikings are unable to trade him they will be cutting him by today’s 4pmET deadline. That means the Bears can swoop in and get a major upgrade at a bargain price.

2. Quarterback Matt Flynn

Ever since Russell Wilson took his job in Seattle, Flynn has been bouncing around the NFL. He’s had some ups and downs as a backup in Green Bay and Oakland but never really found his niche. He may not be a starting quality quarterback but the Chicago Bears could desperately use more depth at the most important position on the field.

Connor Shaw was having a fine game on Saturday afternoon against the Chiefs when the worst happened. Shaw’s leg is now broken and he’s expected to miss the entire 2016 season. That robs the Bears of their best option for the backup spot behind Jay Cutler. Brian Hoyer has been typically terrible this preseason and David Fales does not inspire much confidence. Say what you want about Cutler but if he’s hurt Chicago could well be a winless team.

Signing Flynn would be a smart insurance policy to prevent that worst-case scenario from happening.

3. Cornerback Trumaine McBride

I know. I know. You don’t even need to write the comment.

Yes, McBride is not a good cover corner, which is why the Chicago Bears got rid of him just two years are selecting him in the seventh round of the 2007 draft.

That being said, where else are the Bears going to go?

With Kyle Fuller and Tracy Porter both injured Chicago is in an impossible position and heading for a disaster against a deep Houston Texans wide receiver corps Week 1. Antonio Cromartie has signed with the Colts, Keenan Lewis is still months away from being in football shape and the list of other free agent corners is one of the most depressing things you’ll ever read.

McBride knows where Soldier Field is and he can stand on two legs. At this point that may be good enough.
