Three players who hold the key to Liverpool’s hopes against Villarreal

Daniel Sturridge

The Liverpool striker was surprisingly snubbed by Jurgen Klopp in the first leg. The 48-year-old opted to turn to out-of-favour centre-forward Christian Benteke ahead of Sturridge in the second half against Villarreal. The former Chelsea and Manchester City striker was restored to the manager’s starting line-up against Swansea City but struggled to find any sort of form despite his recent goal record in the Premier League. While Sturridge has proven himself as one of the Premier League’s best goal-scorers, the 26-year-old needs to prove his calibre on the European stage. He has only scored one Europa League goal this season.

James Milner

In the absence of captain Jordan Henderson and Emre Can, James Milner will be tasked with providing the leadership in Klopp’s midfield. The 30-year-old has been in impressive form for the Reds in recent weeks in both the Europa League and the Premier League. His ability to get forward and support Liverpool’s front-men, carry out his defensive duties tenaciously as well as produce an accurate delivery make the two-time Premier League winner a vital component of Klopp’s side.

Philippe Coutinho

The Brazilian magician struggled to influence the first leg at Estadio El Madrigal. The 23-year-old has seen is red-hot form evaporate in recent weeks but the Reds need their star player to turn up at Anfield like he did against Borussia Dortmund. Liverpool were able to create chances against the Yellow Submarine and Klopp will be hoping that Coutinho can play the architect role at the heart of his side.
