Three reasons why Georginio Wijnaldum is excellent Liverpool signing

Goal-scoring ability

Jurgen Klopp is doing well to address a lack of goals in his Liverpool side in the current transfer window. Only Roberto Firmino - an attacking midfielder, not a centre-forward - managed to hit double figures in the Premier League. Sadio Mane’s addition should help to ease the goal burden on Firmino and co. Georginio Wijnaldum, like Firmino, had no trouble finding the back of the net in his first season in the Premier League, either. The Netherlands international scored 11 times in 38 Premier League appearances in his first season in England - all for a club that was ultimately relegated.

Experience of winning PSV title

If the Liverpool manager is going to mould his squad into Premier League champions then signing title winners would be a help. Wijnaldum has such experience. The 25-year-old midfielder was a key part of PSV Eindhoven’s side alongside Memphis Depay that won the Eredivisie title in 2015. The Dutch playmaker netted 14 times in 33 top-flight games to inspire a first Eredivisie title for PSV since 2008.

Versatility an asset

Jamie Carragher questioned how Klopp would accommodate Wijnaldum in his side on Twitter last week. While it is true that sometimes versatility can be a curse, where this Reds side is concerned, it is surely a blessing. The Dutch star can play as a box-to-box midfielder alongside Emre Can, or alternatively, as one of the three behind the main striker. In an age where players need to be flexible in terms of their ability to play in different roles, Wijnaldum’s versatility should be viewed as a plus.
