Three reasons why Liverpool should sign Mario Gotze

Star quality

Of the seven summer signings, Sadio Mane has proven the most popular addition with Liverpool fans following his £34m move to Anfield from Southampton. The African forward has scored 11 times and has made five assists in his Liverpool career so far in the Premier League. While Mane has been a big success, the Merseyside outfit still lack a marquee signing that would give the fans a huge lift heading into Jurgen Klopp’s second full season at Anfield. Gotze, who is a World Cup winner, would do just that.

Point to prove

The 24-year-old was hoping that a return to Borussia Dortmund would kick-start his career after a frustrating three-year spell at Bayern Munich. However, Gotze has struggled to force his way into Thomas Tuchel’s plans. The Germany international has started nine games in the 2016-17 Bundesliga season – scoring one goal and making one assist. With questions previously asked of Gotze’s attitude and fitness, the forward has a point to prove to his detractors.

Klopp relationship

There is chemistry between Gotze and Klopp. The Liverpool manager handed the playmaker his Bundesliga debut in 2009. Together, Gotze and Klopp were instrumental in Dortmund’s back-to-back league title successes in 2011 and 2012 before reaching the Champions League final in the forward’s final act before his controversial move to Bayern. Klopp still believed in Gotze. Speaking in an interview with Bild in January, Klopp said: “The world-class footballer in him still lies dormant. It’s like cycling – you can’t unlearn it.”
