Manchester United have been confirmed as an interested party for Benfica and Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez by numerous sources in Portugal.

Fernandez has enjoyed a rapid rise in recent months. Back in June, he earned a transfer from River Plate to Benfica. He has also earned his first few senior caps for Argentina this year, recently scoring an impressive goal in their World Cup win over Mexico.

There has already been some anticipation about what the next step might be for Fernandez. There could be the possibility of a transfer to the Premier League at some point in the future.

Man Utd are among the clubs to have already been linked, and it seems their interest is concrete. Indeed, three Portuguese sources – A BolaJornal De Noticias and Record – have listed the Red Devils as potential takers for the 21-year-old.

After adding Casemiro and Christian Eriksen to their midfield in the summer, Man Utd may be on the lookout for further reinforcements in the position.

Fernandez has come to their attention as someone who could be of use for the long term. However, he will not come cheap.

After signing him for €12million in the summer, Benfica have inserted a €120million release clause into Fernandez’s contract. Hence, Man Utd would have to pay more than £103million to prise him away from the Primeira Liga outfit.

Benfica are unwilling to listen to offers below Fernandez’s exit clause after only getting to enjoy his talents across 24 appearances so far. To date, he has contributed three goals and five assists for his new club.

Man Utd should wait before Enzo Fernandez bid

A €120million move for Fernandez would be a record investment for Man Utd. At this moment in time, he might not have a big enough body of work to justify it.

His potential is obvious and his recent World Cup goal has proven he can do it on the biggest stages, too.

But it would be a risk for Man Utd to put together a nine-figure bid for a player who has only just come to European football.

In time, there might be an appropriate moment to bid for Fernandez. But while Benfica’s demands are so high, it may be best to simply keep track of his progress rather than try anything official for now.

Incidentally, Man Utd are likely looking at some other players in Fernandez’s position as well. Therefore, they will have to assess all their options, including those that already have Premier League experience.
