Three talking points from Liverpool’s 3-0 win against Exeter City

Ojo makes his Anfield entrance

One of the big plus points from Liverpool’s FA Cup third-round replay was undoubtedly the emergence of Sheyi Ojo. The 18-year-old has been on the radar of most Liverpool supporters after he was recalled from his loan at Wolves last month. His introduction in the second half added pace to Jurgen Klopp’s side that were in control of proceedings, but couldn’t quite break the Exeter City line. Ojo’s goal oozed class and the hallmarks of a Daniel Sturridge finish. The former MK Dons forward curled a delicious left-footed finish past the Exeter goalkeeper to mark his Anfield debut with a goal. Could Ojo feature more regularly in the second half of the season? On the evidence of Wednesday night, he could be a good impact sub.

The Scouse Cafu receive hero’s welcome

Liverpool posted a video on their Twitter page ahead of Wednesday night’s FA Cup game which emphasised Jon Flanagan’s lengthy 619 day lay-off. A lot has changed at Anfield since Flanagan’s last Premier League appearance against Newcastle United in May 2014. Althougn Flanagan hadn’t kicked a ball in a competitive game, he still made an impression on Klopp with positive energy throughout rehab. Deservedly, the 23-year-old received a rapturous welcome when he was brought on in the 51st minute. Given Liverpool’s litany of foreign stars, it is no surprise that the home supporters were delighted to see a Scouser in Klopp’s side. Hopefully, Flanagan can push Nathaniel Clyne and Alberto Moreno for a starting spot and add some local flavour to Klopp’s side, which is sorely missed since the retirements of Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard.

Benteke struggles continue…

How do you solve a problem like Christian Benteke? The £32.5m striker must have been a tad embarrassed to play against the League Two side when most of Liverpool’s established first-team players were rested for the third-round replay. Klopp handed Benteke the captain’s armband at St James’s Park, a mark of respect perhaps. But the former Borussia Dortmund manager would have hoped the 25-year-old could rattle a few goals past Exeter, finding form and confidence. But two strike outs mean there is more pressure than ever on Benteke. The situation with the Belgium international will require careful man management if Klopp sees Benteke in his long-term plans, which for now, doesn’t seem likely.
