Three talking points from Liverpool’s 4-3 loss to Bournemouth

Defensive questions

Liverpool have been talked up as Premier League title contenders throughout most of the 2016-17 season so far. However, the one big question mark hanging over Jurgen Klopp and his squad is their defence. The Reds appeared to have silenced their critics with three successive clean sheets but Liverpool’s back four collapsed in spectacular fashion at the Vitality Stadium. Joel Matip’s absence with an injury was a contributory factor but it was disappointing to see experienced professionals like James Milner making uncharacteristic errors.

Karius doubts resurface

Loris Karius will receive most of the heat after Liverpool’s 4-3 loss at Bournemouth. The Germany Under-21 international appeared to have temporarily put to bed questions over his goalkeeping after clean sheets against Southampton and Sunderland. But his indecisiveness led to increased nerves amongst Klopp’s defence and it was almost inevitable that the German shot stopper would make a mistake. His handling was poor in the lead up to Nathan Ake’s winner. He is 23 and is playing in his first season in the Premier League but Karius is quickly learning that the English top flight can be a hostile environment.

Response crucial

Liverpool have had a kind run of fixtures since a goalless draw with Manchester United in October. The Reds would have targeted at least 24 points from nine fixtures against Premier League clubs in the bottom 14. After six games, Liverpool have collected 13 points. It’s a decent return but with a tough run of fixtures starting with a home clash against Manchester City on New Year’s Eve, Liverpool need to collect nine points from their next three fixtures to end 2016 on a satisfactory note.
