Thumb injury sends Oakland 3B Chapman to 10-day DL

The Oakland Athletics placed third baseman Matt Chapman on the 10-day disabled list because of a right thumb contusion.

Chapman, 25, was hitting .250 with 10 home runs and 26 RBIs in 69 games this season. He had played in 149 consecutive games before the injury.

The A's recalled infielder Franklin Barreto and right-hander Josh Lucas from Triple-A Nashville. The team optioned right-hander Carlos Ramirez to Nashville in addition to placing Chapman on the disabled list.

The injury arrived at a tough time for Chapman, who was hitting .368 (14-for-38) with a .489 on-base percentage in June. He hit only .186 (19-for-102) with a .272 on-base percentage in May.

Barreto, 22, will receive another look in the big leagues after going 0-for-6 in two previous stints this season. He hit .197 (14-for-71) with two home runs and six RBIs in 25 games with Oakland in 2017.

Lucas, 27, has no decisions with a 3.24 ERA in nine career appearances (one start). He takes the spot of Ramirez, 27, who allowed two runs in six innings out of the bullpen this season.
