Tiernan Lynch on why he accepted Derry City job and 'biggest club' vision
Tiernan Lynch says he can't wait to get stuck into the likes of Shelbourne and Shamrock Rovers, even if Larne's recent humbling by the Hoops gave him 'sleepless nights'.
The 44-year-old former Inver Park supremo, who guided Larne to back-to-back Premiership titles and the group stages of European competition, is settling into his new role as manager of Derry City.
His appointment was confirmed on Monday night, and on Wednesday he faced the media to explain his reasons for taking the Brandywell job, which comes just one month after he turned down the opportunity to manage St Johnstone in the Scottish Premiership.

He said: "I had a great seven and a half years at Larne. But as soon as I met the representatives of Derry City it was a very quick decision and not too much to think about. I am well aware of how big this club is and how big a challenge lies ahead, but it is one I am relishing.
"I was fortunate enough to get a job offer in the Scottish Premiership back in October, which I turned down. But when I spoke with Derry it was a no-brainer.
"The challenge is definitely one that will be very rewarding. I understand there is a lot of work to happen on and off the pitch. Similar to what was done at Larne. It is something we feel we can bring to Derry City."
He added: "I won't sit here and tell the fans any lies of make any guarantees I can't deliver on. But I can guarantee hard work. This is a massive challenge.
"There are top teams in this league, but I wouldn't take the job is I didn't believe this club has the potential to be the biggest club on he island of Ireland. And my job is to bring that out."
Lynch says his mission is to transform Derry City into the "biggest club on the island of Ireland", confident rhetoric that will resonate with fans following a disappointing end to their season.

The Candystripes were bang in contention for the League of Ireland title until a late collapse saw them finish fourth, and then they slumped to a 2-0 defeat to Drogheda in the final of the FAI Cup.
Former boss Ruaidhri Higgins left five days later, and three days after that Lynch's appointment was confirmed.
"I fully believe Derry City can be the biggest club on the island of Ireland. I think there is so much success that can be brought here, on and off the field./ It is a challenge I will relish," he said.
"It will be a challenge, but it is a task we're up for. And as long as the fans get behind us, we know we have the backing of the ownership and board.
"And ultimately we want to fulfil the ambitions of the supporters."
One challenge Lynch is relishing is pitting his wits against top sides including Shamrock Rovers and newly crowned champions Shelbourne.
Asked if Larne's UEFA Conference League clash with Rovers, which the Hoops won 4-1, had whetted his appetite, Lynch joked: "I haven't slept since that game. I appreciate you bringing that up.
"There is no doubt that is one of the reasons we came here. That challenge, and trying to knock teams like Shelbourne and Shamrock Rovers off their perch. And bring some pride here.
"It won't be easy, and isn't an overnight fix. This is a journey and one we are up for. Hopefully it will bring Derry City in a direction they deserve to be in.
"We can't wait to get started."
