Tigers manager Brad Ausmus: Fans messing with players is 'fair game'

There was much confusion in the outfield Wednesday when a Rays fan kept screaming "I got it!" to throw off Tigers players.

Brad Ausmus isn't mad at the Rays fan who kept throwing off his Tigers outfielders.

During Wednesday's game at Tropicana Field, confusion erupted in when pop-ups turned into hits during the first three innings.

Center fielder JaCoby Jones, right fielder Tyler Collins and second baseman Ian Kinsler all missed balls when they heard someone screaming, "I got it!" However, it was a rowdy fan in the stands, not a member of the team.

"It's fair game, if you're a fan. I'm not the blaming [the] fan or anything. He's within his rights to do that," Ausmus said Thursday, via mlive.com. "We have to make the adjustment."

Ausmus said he has never dealt with something like this before in the majors. He also indicated that the light crowd — 12,281 people were in attendance — contributed to the fan's voice being louder.

"I think the acoustics of Tropicana Field helped and the fact that there's not a huge number of people sitting in the stands," Ausmus told reporters. "Most of the time, when you have a decent-sized crowd, it's all kind of white noise. All the noise kind of mixes together and nothing really stands out."

The Rays won 8-7 after Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias committed a throwing error in the ninth by tripping over himself on what should have been an easy double play.
