Women bare un-photoshopped stomachs in latest TikTok trend: 'Own it'

A growing chain of TikTokers are dancing with their natural, unretouched stomachs out to promote body acceptance on the video-sharing app.

Lizzy Khang, who has over 367K followers on the platform, shared the first video in the growing series on Aug. 28, showing herself confidently dancing to a mashup of “Captain Hook” and “Side to Side” after pulling her high-waisted jeans below her stomach.

“Own it,” she captioned the clip, which has been viewed more than 18.7M times.

Shortly after that, 27-year-old Carolina Guardian, who is an advocate for body positivity, self-love and mental health awareness, duetted Khang’s original concept in a side-by-side clip that has since racked up 10.1M views.

The duet has since snowballed into multiple viral chains of five or more women unapologetically dancing with their bellies out for the sake of self-love — and TikTokers are loving it.

“Now THIS is the greatest chain of all time,” commented a user on one version of the trend.

“I wish I had your confidence I don’t really have any of that,” said another.

One of the influencers featured in the above video, 16-year-old Brooklynne Webb, told BuzzFeed News she decided to join in and share the trend with her over 4.8M followers because of how “happy and positive” the previous participants appeared to be.

“They were being unapologetically themselves,” she told the outlet.

Webb added that she believed the trend felt “freeing,” especially amid a social media landscape that often promotes false and unattainable images of perfect bodies.

On Aug. 29, Khang took to her Instagram to clarify the inspiration behind the dancing trend after another account apparently claimed she was just trying to “expose” women who use photoshop.

“Y’all are acting like having a tummy isn’t normal,” she captioned her explanatory post. “The point of the video was to show young girls it’s OK to have a tummy. Every body is a beautiful body. It’s 2020, we don’t body shame anymore. That’s all, take care and stay safe.”
