Former England captain Nasser Hussain expects Joe Root to be more ruthless in his approach as the English skipper in the Headingly Test and wants him to pick the right battles. Root has been under scrutiny for his tactics on the final day at Lord’s which cost them the Test and he will be under huge pressure ahead of the third Test against India.
Root changed the bowling plans when Jasprit Bumrah walked into bat and he immediately brought in Mark Wood to bowl bouncers to Bumrah. The plans backfired as Bumrah and Shami stitched an 89 run partnership together and tilted the game towards India.

Nasser Hussain was concerned about Joe Root being one of the popular figures in the dressing room and among the English crowds, which might prompt him to take some wrong decisions. He added Root should not worry about his captaincy era and he should try to be more convicted on what needs to be done for the side.
“Joe is extremely popular within the dressing room and with England supporters — you only have to listen to all the chants of ‘Rooooooot’ to know that — but I’m afraid the England captaincy is not a popularity contest.”
“The only thing I would say, not just about Root but also this England regime, is that it seems they do not quite know when to be ruthless and when is the right time for Joe to be an angry captain. The time to offer the stick rather than the carrot,” Nasser Hussain wrote in his column in Daily Mail.
Nasser Hussain Feels Joe Root Needs To Battle To Get His Best Test Side
Joe Root has been missing the best England test squad due to injury reasons, the Covid-19 protocols, and the mental stress involved with it. Ben Stokes was the latest entry as he decided to take an indefinite break ahead of the series against India and it has been a big hole so far to fill in.
Nasser Hussain felt that Root should be battling to get his best side on the pitch rather than the wrong tactics he used in battling against India on the final day.
“At times, Joe picks the wrong moment to go into battle. He got it wrong on that final morning at Lord’s when he picked a fight with Jasprit Bumrah. He would be better off picking a battle with his top three over their lack of runs, or the ECB over scheduling.”
“And maybe he should be picking a battle with Ashley Giles and Silverwood about why he has had one arm tied behind his back and hasn’t had his best Test side at any stage in the last year. I’d like to see an angry Joe then,” he added.
Joe Root has been the man in form for England with two centuries already in the series against India.
