We have all borne witness to the rise and rise of Timothée Chalamet.

Since his 2017 standout performance in Call Me By Your Name, the 25-year old actor has picked up blockbuster role after role, amassing a cult following in his wake. Perhaps just as thrilling, is his evolving - and increasingly daring - style.

The actor is at the forefront of changing menswear on the red carpet by consistently shying away from traditional black tie dinner jackets in favour of designers doing formalwear with a twist.

The hint was there in 2018 with the flashy, all-white Berluti suit and tie he wore to the Oscars, designed by the creative director Haider Ackermann. It was with the Colombian-born French designer that his sartorial journey would continue, and together they teamed up for the press tour of Chalamet’s next feature film, Beautiful Boy.

At its Toronto Film Festival premiere, Ackermann dressed Chalemet in a slim-cut dark suit with charming white blossom print. A month later, at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Awards, it was an inverted lapel blazer with curved white detailing. Three years on, and the pair have an ever increasing list of fashion moments – and show no sign of slowing.

Ackermann was behind the striking co-ord Chalamet wore at The King premiere during the 2019’s Venice Film Festival – a grey satin suit with a double-belted waist, worn with a shining cowl neck shirt. It was also Ackermann who dressed him in the padded shoulder, black crystal encrusted look for this year’s Dune showing in Venice. And, of course, Ackermann was responsible for the star’s 2021 Met Gala look—a cropped white satin, double breasted jacket and tracksuit bottoms.

In London for the UK premiere of Dune, Chalamet was joined by co-lead Zendaya in black Alexander McQueen tailoring, with a sprinkling of punk in zippers that wound round sleeves and trousers. The house has been a favourite of the actor since 2018, when he began wearing rich, floral print satin suits by creative director Sarah Burton.

For the film’s photocall a day before, Chalamet was pictured wearing another of his go-to British designers, Stella McCartney. He opted for a matching mushroom print suit and collarless shirt in cream and blue, which was first seen on the Paris runway for McCartney’s SS22 collection. It comes after a striking fuchsia suit and unbuttoned shirt which McCartney dressed him in for the ‘Little Women’ premiere in France last year.

His most rule-breaking looks have come from Louis Vuitton. Creative director Virgil Abloh caused an internet-breaking moment with the embellished harness Chalamet walked the 2019 Golden Globes wearing. For The King screening the same year in London, it was luxury hoodie time, as he donned a midnight blue Vuitton pullover, complete with gem studs.
