Timpson has 21, No. 24 Seminoles clamp down on No. 16 Duke

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Makayl Timpson scored 21 points with 10 rebounds and three steals and No. 24 Florida State smothered No. 16 Duke 70-57 on Sunday on a day the Seminoles honored long-time coach Sue Semrau.

Despite making 9 of 15 shots in the last six minutes, the Blue Devils finished 19 of 72 for a season-worst 26.4%. It was the fourth time they scored less than 60 points and they lost three of those games.

Ta'Niya Latson added 15 points for Florida State (19-5, 8-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) and Sara Bejedi had 11. Timpson had her 11th double-double of the season.

Shayeann Day-Wilson was the only Blue Devil in double figures with 14. Kennedy Brown had 11 rebounds and three blocks.

Duke missed its first six shots of the game and trailed 15-12 after one quarter. The Blue Devils missed the first seven shots of the second quarter and trailed 30-22 at the half. They missed their first seven of the third quarter, entered the fourth quarter down 51-34 and missed their next six shots.

Duke managed an 8-7 lead in the first and tied the game at 22 in the second before Florida State scored the last eight points. The difference was the third quarter when the Seminoles were making 9 of 14 and Duke was 3 of 17.

Florida State scored the first seven points of the second half to go up 37-22, then had a 10-1 run to make it 47-27.

In 25-years Semrau won 492 games, was four-time ACC coach of the year and made 16 NCAA Tournaments with three Elite Eights and five Sweet 16s. Current Seminoles coach Brooke Wyckoff was a player on Semrau’s first team.

Florida State is home against Wake Forest on Thursday, the same day Pittsburgh visits Duke.
