Wrestler who failed to qualify for Olympics, hasn't played football since high school signs with Titans

This is some kind of backup plan.

A former All-America wrestler had his sights set on competing in the Tokyo Olympics next month. But he didn't qualify. So he signed a contract with the Tennessee Titans.

The Titans announced on Friday that they signed Adam Coon to compete for a spot on the offensive line. They then posted video of the ex-Michigan wrestler squatting a log.

Can Coon translate wrestling skills into an NFL job?

Coon, 26, hasn't played competitive football since high school. He was a decorated wrestler at Michigan, earning All-America honors three times while compiling a 116-15 record and finishing as national runner-up in his weight class twice.

Since then, he's won a silver medal at the 2018 world championships (286 pounds) and a gold medal at the 2019 Pan-American Games.

He did play football in high school in Michigan, where he was named all-state as a linebacker and all-honorable mention twice as an offensive lineman. His wrestling specialty is Greco Roman, which forbids competitors from using holds below the waist or using their legs for takedowns — which sounds vaguely like playing offensive line.

The Titans report that Coon checks in at 6-foot-5 and 300 pounds and will likely vie for a guard position.
