Manchester United still have Victor Osimhen high up on their list of striker targets – and they are likely to invest in their attack next year, according to a report.
Osimhen has been in strong form for Napoli this season, scoring nine goals in 13 matches between Serie A and the Champions League so far. His output is helping Napoli become title challengers in Italy, so it seems.
In turn, several clubs across Europe have been looking at him as someone they could invest in. Even back in the summer, after an 18-goal season, Osimhen was being linked with Manchester United.
His agent has since clarified that Osimhen is settled in Naples and will be continuing with his current club this season. However, by the summer, Napoli might have to fend off further interest.
According to the Manchester Evening News, Osimhen is still wanted by United. Their list of potential attacking additions is long for the time being, but he is a name who is likely to still be on it by the time they have whittled it down.
The report claims there is a realisation that Man Utd might have to act with regards to their frontline in the summer. Clubs like Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur might be in the market for strikers. With that in mind, United won’t want to miss out on any candidates to those rivals.
Osimhen is someone who is likely to be in demand by many teams. Therefore, Man Utd might want to accelerate their interest in him.
A January transfer will not be possible while he focuses on his pursuit of silverware with Napoli. But Osimhen is someone Man Utd could revisit in the summer.
Napoli still have him under contract until 2025, but might be wary of letting his deal run down too much. Players tend to become available for decreasing prices by the time they have one year left on their contracts.
Hence, sometimes it can make sense to cash in when there are two years remaining on their deals. That will be the case with Osimhen next summer, unless he signs an extension.
Man Utd might be viewing the situation as one that could play into their hands if they decide Osimhen is the striker they want to sign.
Osimhen worthy of prominent place on Man Utd shortlist
Turning 24 in December, the Nigeria international has a big future at the top level. He has plenty of power and precision, making him a tough prospect for opposition defences to deal with.
The qualities he is bringing to Napoli would be welcome for most other clubs in the world. Indeed, Calciomercato has recently been linking him with La Liga champions Real Madrid as well.
Real Madrid might need a long-term successor to Karim Benzema at some point soon. With that in mind, Osimhen could take over from one of the most lethal strikers of a generation.
Clearly, Osimhen can aim for the very top in terms of his career trajectory. But will Man Utd be able to win the race for him in the long term? Or will they settle for a different target, who might also be of an elite standard – or otherwise?
Whatever happens, it will be critical for them to find a new striker next year, especially if Cristiano Ronaldo leaves as expected.
Even after his fade from prominence in recent months, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner will be a tough act to follow. Man Utd will need to get their succession plan right – and by targeting Osimhen, they might well do so.
The report points to the fact that he has performed in Ligue 1 with Lille and Serie A with Napoli. Having adapted to two of Europe’s top five leagues, his lack of Premier League experience shouldn’t be too concerning.
Osimhen would be an exciting signing, but only time will tell if it comes off for Man Utd.
