Reports claim Chelsea are prepared to match the asking price for Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries and will look to sign him in January.

The Blues have been linked with many players during the upcoming window. Graham Potter is hoping to add quality to his ranks to get the season back on track. The west Londoners began the second part of the truncated campaign with a 2-0 home triumph over Bournemouth.

However, the Stamford Bridge outfit are still down in eighth spot. And they need a run of positive results to make a move on the top four.

The winter window may be crucial. Chelsea had been tipped to strengthen even before the latest setback involving Reece James.

The England right-back returned against the Cherries but re-injured his knee and now faces a further month on the sidelines.

Dumfries appears to be a ready-made replacement. He gained experience in the Eredivisie with PSV before moving to the San Siro in August 2021.

The powerful full-back has made a seamless transition to Serie A, with 21 starts among 33 appearances last term.

He has been seen 15 times in the league in 2022-2023, enjoying 13 starts. And the 26-year-old has caught the eye of a number of big-name clubs.

Both Manchester United and Tottenham have been mentioned in connection with the Netherlands international.

But it is links to Chelsea that appear the strongest.

Earlier this week, the capital outfit were ready to ‘ramp up’ their attempt to sign him, according to reports.

It was thought they might look to lure him to the Bridge next summer. However, those plans seem to have been brought forward.

Dumfries price tag no issue for Chelsea

The ex-Sparta Rotterdam ace certainly enhanced his reputation with a series of superb displays at the World Cup.

He blotted his copybook somewhat after being sent off following the quarter-final penalty shootout loss to Argentina.

But, with domestic matters now back on the agenda, the subject of his future is never far from the back pages.

It remains to be seen if other clubs continue to make enquiries about the Dutchman.

But Sportitalia suggest Chelsea are among the clubs who ‘rub their hands together’ at the prospect of signing him.

The report adds that Blues owner Todd Boehly ‘doesn’t envisage any problems’ in backing Potter during the upcoming window.

And they feel there are ‘indications of a concrete attempt’ by Chelsea to sign the Rotterdam-born ace in January.

It is said the Premier League outfit know it would be tough for Inter to ‘put up a strenuous and impossible to scratch resistance’ to offers for Dumfries.

A price tag of €60m has been mooted for a deal to be done and that number will ‘not frighten’ Chelsea.

It is impossible to predict the length of time that James will be in the treatment room for. And so a move to snare Dumfries next month makes sense.

Chelsea are next in action when they travel to the City Ground to take on struggling Nottingham Forest on New Year’s Day.
