Gurley spoke to the media Tuesday for the first time since April at the Los Angeles Rams’ mandatory three-day minicamp.

Gurley, who participated in an individual training program for his knee during organized team activities, continued to do workouts separate from the team Tuesday. The program also involves sessions with the Rams’ strength and conditioning staff and meetings.

What exactly is Gurley doing during those sessions?

“Whatever the trainer tells me to do,” Gurley said.

Excellent.

Coach Sean McVay said Gurley began the program a few months ago with the goal of getting back to full strength for the season opener against the Carolina Panthers. He added that he expects Gurley to start practicing with the team once training camp starts July 25.

“When we start camp, that represents him being able to get out on the field and being able to do some things with his teammates depending on how we finalize that,” McVay said. “But you should expect to see him.”

Gurley missed the last two games of the 2018 regular season because of swelling in his knee. He returned for the divisional game against the Cowboys, but had limited touches in the NFC championship game and the Super Bowl.

Gurley actually injured his knee Week 1 last season against the Raiders, according to Rams preseason radio analyst Maurice Jones-Drew.

It’s not the first time Gurley has come back from a knee injury. He tore his ACL during his last season at Georgia, but the Rams still drafted him 10th overall in 2015.

When asked to compare this comeback to that one, Gurley said he had “bigger problems to worry about coming out of college. This is small.”

The Rams gave Gurley a four-year, $57.5 million contract extension with $45 million guaranteed after the 2017 season. They are hoping his injury is indeed small and their star running back can bounce back after hardly contributing in last year’s postseason.
