Tom Lawrence says he is “delighted” to have chosen Rangers as his next club after signing a deal with the Scottish side following his exit from Derby County.

Lawrence recently reached the end of his contract with Derby, where he had played for the past five seasons. During that time, he amassed 184 appearances, 37 goals and 25 assists.

One of a plethora of players to be leaving Derby after their relegation to League One, the former Rams captain had plenty of suitors. TEAMtalk revealed Rangers were among the interested parties back in May.

Now, they have won the race to sign him. The Glasgow outfit announced Lawrence as a new signing – on an unspecified contract – on Friday.

The forward told their club website: “I am delighted to have joined Rangers and I’m excited to get started.

“The club is known worldwide for its history, successes and fan base and I look forward to being part of that going forward and getting to play in front of the supporters at Ibrox.”

Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst believes the former Manchester United youth – who can play anywhere across the front line – will be a useful option in his squad.

The Dutch coach said: “I am really pleased we have been able to secure the signing of Tom and he will further add to our attacking options.

“He has gained valuable experience over a number of years with Derby County and I look forward to working with him this season.”

Tom Lawrence ‘another strong addition’ for Rangers

Sporting director Ross Wilson concluded: “I would like to welcome Tom to Rangers. It is great to have him joining the squad this summer.

“He is another strong addition to the group ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.”

Rangers finished second, behind cross-city rivals Celtic, in the 2021-22 season. As a result, they have Champions League football to play for.

It will no doubt have been a persuasive factor for Lawrence, who was also an option for lower-half Premier League clubs and Championship contenders.

Now, the Wales international is embarking on a new phase of his career in Scotland at the age of 28.

He is Rangers’ third signing of the summer after defender John Souttar and striker Antonio Colak.
