Wigan Warriors full-back Sam Tomkins has suffered a setback in his recovery from a broken foot and may need another operation.
The England international missed Wigan's Super League Grand Final victory last year after undergoing surgery.
Tomkins is due to make his comeback next month, but the former Man of Steel may need a plate removing from his foot, potentially ruling him out for up to eight weeks.
Wigan coach Shaun Wane revealed: "He tried to run with the plate and he's still struggling, so we're debating whether to take the plate our or not. If that happens, it's six to eight weeks.
"We're having a chat to the physios and the specialist. He just wants to play, I feel sorry for him. I felt personally gutted when he tried to run last week and struggled with it, I could see he was down.
"We'll speak to the specialist and make sure we get him right."
Tomkins also missed the first three months of last season following a knee operation.
