Riza: I need to see more from Kanga

Omer Riza has explained why Wilfried Kanga was dropped from the squad ahead of the 2-0 home defeat by QPR.

The Bluebirds striker, currently on loan from Hertha BSC, has proved a major disappointment since his arrival, failing to score or contribute meaningfully at the top end of the pitch.

He has gone from a nailed-on starter under Erol Bulut to a bench option under Riza. However, on Wednesday evening he was dropped all together, a decision which allowed Michael Reindorf to get promoted to the first-team bench.

Explaining the situation, Riza said: "Willy Kanga, I decided to leave him out the squad. I need to see more and there's got to be an element of competition in the team. Young Michael Reindorf has been training, so I wanted to put him on the bench today to give him an opportunity. That's it, the squad have to accept it and have to work hard. Hopefully Willy will come into training and work even harder to get himself back into the squad.

"It's been difficult for Willy because he hasn't scored. He started the first five or six games and wasn't able to.

"He has failed to score, create and it's been tough for him. There have been conversations to try to get there, but at the same time, when you come on you've got to make an impact. I know it's difficult, but it's got to be hard work and endeavour. It was purely on selection and giving someone else the opportunity."

Collins 'frustrated' over lack of game-time

Jamilu Collins is another who has seen his game-time greatly reduce under Riza.

He started the 4-1 defeat up at Hull City in Riza's first game as interim boss but has not played a minute since. He has just two appearances to his name all season.

And Riza appreciates the Nigeria international, who has had a whirlwind time of it since joining after leaving SC Paderborn more than two years ago, is frustrated, but the two players ahead of him are performing to a standard which has placed them above Collins in Riza's pecking order.

"There's an element of the players being frustrated that they haven't had the opportunity to play in a team the way we play now," Riza said. Sign up to our daily Cardiff City newsletter here.

"JC (Collins) is the same. He feels he could perform in the way we are playing, which is nice to hear, there's a different style. Unfortunately for him he has two players in front of him in Callum O'Dowda and Joel Bagan who are there and I'm not going to just take them out of the squad to give them the opportunity."

Reindorf reveals goals target

Michael Reindorf has set his sights on scoring 15 goals this season and is aiming for more first-team involvement after being called up to the squad in midweek.

The 19-year-old striker signed on a free after leaving Norwich City in the summer and has proved to be a success for the youth team. Whether he can continue that form at first-team level is another question all together, however, having played just two Carabao Cup games up until this point.

But Riza placing faith in him and naming him on the bench in the defeat by QPR is a big step forward for him. Speaking to the FAW, Reindorf, who has netted 13 times including friendlies, said: “I want to get 15 goals before the end of the year and I want to get more involvement with the first team, hopefully score in the league and keep on pushing to be the best player I can.

“The lads have been training well, we’ve been doing well and I feel like it’s just time to go and keep on working hard, playing for each other as a team, and get that win on Saturday.”

The game to which Reindorf refers is the Nathaniel MG Cup semi-final against Aberystwyth Town tomorrow. Whether the striker will be involved or not is a mystery, given the first team are in action against Coventry City.

But Reindorf has spoken of the difference in playing against men as opposed to other under-21s teams and how it has readied him for the challenge of stepping into that first-team environment.

“Playing against men has been a real challenge,” said Reindorf. “I’m still quite young and playing against men gives you a different dynamic – it gives you a more physical battle, whilst the intensity is still very high.

“It’s improving me physically and my thinking on the ball, off the ball. It’s helped me progress and get near to the first team.

“Every time, there has been a different challenge. In the last round we nearly fell short, but to get the last minute winner was really good and it was good vibes.

“It’s way more competitive [than academy-level football], they put everything on the line, they work for every single ball, so the competitiveness is very strong. From when I’m playing in the under-21s to when I’m playing in the Nathaniel MG Cup, you can just tell the difference.”

Lampard demands 'energy and urgency' against Cardiff

Frank Lampard has emphasised his intent to shape Coventry City in his own vision as they prepare to welcome Cardiff City tomorrow. The encounter pits the 17th placed team against the 21st, with both sides eager to snap a four-game winless streak.

Lampard's squad starts just a point ahead of the Bluebirds and is acutely aware of the need for an immediate boost in their performance.

"I'll pick the team," Lampard told the BBC. "With a lot of conversations from the coaching staff. I'll tap into their expertise of having worked with the players but I come in with a few ideas of my own.

"I've got a good impression from what I've seen. The squad is strong, has been well put together and has a nice balance to it. But there's a reason why we're where are in the league. We have to find the reason and we have to find results.

"The first task is get a win and get a good feeling," Lampard emphasised. "We're at home and we'll have the fans behind us and I'm always grateful for what the fans can bring you.

"But, for me, it always rests on the players to produce an energy and an urgency that the fans will relate to that. For me, that is always the first thing I demand."
