The defeat was Biarritz’s fourth home loss of the season and their eighth in total, leaving them eight points adrift at the foot of the table with the rest of the league’s side still to play this weekend.

Former Wales flyhalf James Hook missed an early penalty but some indiscipline in the Biarritz scrum gifted Hook a second chance, of which he dully took.

Fortunes soon reversed, however, with Perpignan conceding a penalty in the scrum which allowed for Dmitri Yachvili to pull his side level before kicking between the posts once more to put the hosts in front.

Hook then levelled the scores moments before half-time with his second penalty of the night.

It was another penalty that separated the two sides after the break with Yachvili finding his range before the game’s only try was scored. Hooker Guirado took advantage of his side’s tremendous rolling maul to cross the line. Hook’s conversion was successful as the visitors took a 13-9 lead.

Yachvili continued to kick well and reduced the deficit late on but, with Biarritz pushing to find a score, Hook’s kick in the 71st minute opened up a four-point gap that the hosts failed to recover from.
